In this new world in which we operate, where the emphasis is on corporate governance, financial awareness for the business manager is not an option but a necessity, and we must continue to develop our financial knowledge as an ongoing process.

If you are - or will in the future be - involved in the preparation and/or assessment of a business plan, this programme will give you some tools to support you and enhance the input you can make to the process.

If your decisions impact the bottom line of your division or company, if you already have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of finance and want to expand this knowledge, and if you want to focus on the key financial parameters of the financial assessment of corporate strategy... then this is the programme for you.

A strong emphasis is placed on the identification, financial evaluation and selection of the optimal strategy, in terms of planning for growth either in existing business activities or via acquisition.

But growth for its own sake is not enough. The thrust of future growth strategy must produce conditions, which guarantee corporate financial stability and ensure corporate profitability.

Benefits of Attending
Senior executives must move beyond basic balance sheet accounting concepts and be capable of using financial information to assess corporate strategy and value-adding proposals such as plans for growth, either through developing existing business activities or by acquisition, and also ensure that corporate stability and profitability are maintained. This programme takes you into the more advanced financial techniques required to evaluate the profitability and liquidity implications of your corporate strategic planning.

You will learn how to:
  • review your company's budgets to determine its strengths and weaknesses using ratio analysis techniques
  • establish a set of suitable objectives and quantify the demand for funds required to obtain the objectives, the supply of funds available to fund them and the strategic gap arising
  • identify and evaluate suitable external and internal projects and acquisition options aimed at closing a strategic gap
  • select and value a company suitable for acquisition using different economic evaluation techniques including the discounted cash flow approach
  • put an 'offer' document together
  • financially consolidate existing business plans with the agreed selected strategic plans to ensure compatibility with corporate profile objectives.
What will you learn
An important feature of this programme is the practical hands-on case study work. This core case study written especially for this programme will run throughout the four and a half days. This unique case study is fully documented and manuals have been prepared to guide the group through each stage in the development of a financial assessment of a strategic plan for a multi-product corporation. You will be taken step-by-step through each stage of this programme from budget review, objective setting, internal project evaluation and negotiation of a company for acquisition, to the consolidation of each facet of the proposed strategy into a consolidated business plan.

During the case study you will learn how to:
  • develop a strategic business plan
  • undertake the financial assessment of such a plan
  • use with confidence the key financial evaluation tools from financial ratios to Economic Value Added (EVA) techniques
  • quantify the demand for funds required to attain stated corporate objectives
  • compute the supply of funds generated by existing business strategies
  • establish the scale of the strategic gap between the supply of - and demand for - funds
  • evaluate internal and external project proposals put forward to close the strategic gap
  • consolidate and evaluate existing and agreed future strategic initiatives, including companies selected for future acquisition with the existing business plans, so as to ensure compatibility with stated corporate objectives.
